Momentum Behind Market Solutions for the Rural Poor

August 28, 2009

Seth Godin seems to be backing Acumen Fund, most recently in this nice post. But he’s not just pitching Acumen, he understands, and outlines the approach nicely.
On the potential impact when the rural poor can create a small buffer:
“From a fundraising point of view, this endless emergency is exactly what a non-profit needs to find [...]

Shot of the Day: Bruk

May 16, 2009

If I was starting an NGO here (which, I guess, I am) and Bruk was not already working for another organization (which, unfortunately, he is), he’s the first employee I’d hire in Ethiopia. He’s a driver/procurement officer with IDE, working with Practica people regularly. He’s extremely hardworking, insightful on many things Ethiopian and always smiling. [...]

Netsanet: Beauty and two dollars a day

April 1, 2009

This is Netsanet.

She’s one of those fundamentally beautiful people. She can’t hide it. Everyone notices.

Drilling Shots

March 10, 2009

Manual drilling training kicked off near Ziway last week. Pretty well, actually. Vongi, our trainer arrived and after a few days of preparation, we were off to get dirty.
Anything involving sludging makes a mess. At least when people are learning. And in the mixture? A little manure. Some dung. A dash of cow shit. It [...]

Talking tech for dollar-a-day farmers

February 6, 2009

Last week was a flurry of meetings, presentation and (more interesting) off-line discussions, all surrounding how to get income-generating technology into the hands of poor farmers. The setting was Ziway, Ethiopia, the occasion the annual technology meeting for one of Practica’s key partners, International Development Enterprises (IDE). Now IDE knows a thing or two about [...]
