5 Year Plans

January 17, 2010

How do you feel about your 5 year plan? Don’t have one? Terrified of the thought? If so, you’re not alone.
Many folks in the 25-35 year age bracket (i.e. this blog’s main readership) seem to shudder of the thought of a 5 year plan. It reminds us that we’ll be 5 years older in only [...]

Lego Language

November 10, 2009

There are some posts that just make you write your own. Such is the case with Giles Turnbull’s recent piece on Lego terminology.
Every family, it seems, has its own set of words for describing particular Lego pieces. No one uses the official names. “Dad, please could you pass me that Brick 2×2?” No. In our [...]

What Was Your Last Journey?

October 27, 2009

What’s the last journey you’ve taken? Where were you going? Did you ever ‘arrive’? And, perhaps most interesting, how did you feel as you were starting out?

Photographer’s Toughest Shots

October 15, 2009

A friend recently posted about me fighting for a good surf shot. The truth is, I don’t hunt too hard for a shot, I just capture my surroundings. The photography is never the aim, just the byproduct. So I don’t have too many heroic photographic stories, just interesting adventures where I happened to have a [...]

Shot of the Day: Late Summer Celebration

September 19, 2009

Somehow this shot seems appropriate today. I’m just about to head off for the wedding of close friends. The next wedding is for this guy in the photo. And I still have a few more days of late summer celebration before heading to Oxford. Life could be worse. Enjoy your Saturday, everybody.

Lessons from Nati and Feven

August 24, 2009

Three things I learned with Teshome’s kids yesterday:
1) If you are a boy, you cannot be a girl.
2) Your head is not paper.
3) One must go from 6 years old to 7. It is simply not possible to go back to 5, nor is it possible to skip to 8.
Please take note.

Happiness

August 23, 2009

(written yesterday)
Ashley and I were having a bite to eat last night. At some point we began talking about happiness. Fundamental happiness. And lack of it. I’ve both at times here in Ethiopia. It comes with the territory of living and working for long stints outside of your own culture, and far from home.
This is [...]

Shot of the Day: Gramps

June 21, 2009

My namesake, George Baker. A lazy Sunday means time to bring back another classic. If you’ve seen Gran Tourino, and enjoyed Eastwood’s character, you’ll understand George. Minus the racism…
Grandpa’s come up recently in conversation a couple times. We were talking about proposals. I remembered the time I asked Grandpa how he proposed to Granny.
“Uggggnnnhhh. Hmmmph. [...]

The Island

December 29, 2008

I’m about to leave the cabin we rented for Christmas and head back to Vancouver. Typically, it was a well-fed, family-filled, relaxed-verging-on-sedated Christmas, like most.
In fact, I’m ready to jump back in to everything. Like living as 4 in a small 2 bedroom appt for the next week. And trying to get The First Drop [...]
