It’s been a hectic and wonderful day at Skoll:Emerge, a one-day conference for student social entrepreneurs. Let’s call Skoll:Emerge a qualified, hopeful hit. Good interaction with students, some interesting panels and a couple dynamite mainstage speakers (Caroline Casey especially). All for a student-friendly price. It’s been a haze, so I’m going to try something new for Cashewman: pull some tweets from the day into the post to give everyone a taste of what folks were talking about.

” Hartigan: “time to end focus on the heroic individual in social entrepreneurship” @slbova

“New model for scale? CDI pilots first friendly take-over of an NGO” @SkollCentre

“The main messages from EMERGE: “be dangerous”, dream, don’t settle, challenge the traditional and never give up” @santalvarez

“What have you done that is so much more intelligent than the poor?” - Laila questioning the “we know better” approach ” @SkollCentre

“Laila Iskandar Kamel: “This is not charity, this is not CSR. This is business.” On self-sustaining recycling schools in Egpyt” @emilychew

“JFDI School of Management.. probably not taught at Oxford SAID Business School … Just Fu*kin Do It… I need to take this advice” @Jlowthrop

“”We have to get beyond the community group that gets together and tries to be nice to each other.” Barbara Hammond” @brendanbaker

“Nick Temple: Start collecting data (any kind of data) early. It becomes difficult to measure things retrospectively” @vijanafm

(with Caroline Casey)

“Caroline Casey ‘Being a social entrepreneur ISN’T a career path, it’s something you just know you have to do’ ” @emilychew

“Don’t call Caroline disabled. She’ll whip out her white stick and show you who’s boss. ” @SkollCentre

” ‘Do you know how much more we see with our minds than we see with our eyes?” Caroline Casey on being legally blind ” @brendanbaker

“Cant stop the laughter in here RT @SchSocEnt: Caroline Casey: “Have you noticed that every James Bond villain has a disability?” ” @SkollCentre

“Caroline Casey recieves a standing ovation after daring everyone to be dangerous as final words.” @vijanafm

“Albert: Its ok to sacrifice some social return to ensure sustainability of the business - so it can continue to have social impact” @SkollCentre

“What if there were mergers and acquisitions in SE? How would that affect organization quality?” @brendanbaker

“”Do you want to be the hill, or the king of the hill? The http or the amazon.com? Scale or systemic change?’ Ben Metz,” @brendanbaker

(on Intrapreneurship - changing existing organizations from the inside)

“Need to be flexible & versatile, understand that the company has a core business, driven by the bottom line. #intrapreneur” @brendanbaker

“Intrapreneurs launch “cushioned” start-ups. Challenge is to embed yourself in the DNA of the company.” @SkollCentre

“Intrapreneurs must be comfortable working in shades of gray, speaking various languages to different audiences.” @brendanbaker

“How to be a successful intrapreneur?: Earn respect internally by doing the mainstream work well.- Henry” @SkollCentre

There you have it.
