The End of Print?

by Brendan on August 10, 2009

Is this what the end of print looks like? Borders closing in Oxford Circus, London.

Wow… That’s one of my favourite stores too… gutted.

This might be a GOOD thing; Borders might close, but the smaller, independent book shops might stay open, as god intended. It could be a rationalizing of the industry (something you could comment on, B) and that might be good. Maybe books will be sold by people who see them as books, not product, or inventory. Mind you, newspapers are in trouble, too. We may be at the very point of historic change in print media (”the media formally known as Print”, eh?)

I agree with Doug, it may be a good thing, giving the opportunity back to the little guys. I don’t think, at least I sure hope, that there will never be an end of print. There is really something to be said for picking up a good book and curling up in a chair, or reading the newspaper with your morning coffee. These are two little things that I love doing, that I hope will never go away.

Brendan Reply:

you know, we were talking about this yesterday. I’m waking up with my coffee(s) right now, and reading the morning paper. Except it’s online, like it’s been for me for years now.
I do read the paper differently in print and online. In print I browse through the pages leisurely. Online I’m efficient, relying on the headlines to convince me that the stories are worth my time.
