A New Home: Oriel College, Oxford

by Brendan on July 9, 2009

I think I’ve been a little opaque about Oxford. A lot of people have helped me try to get there, and others have humored me along the way. Well, I’m going, starting in September, to do their MBA. And word on a college finally came through: Oriel.

Seems interesting. Mid-size, central, beautiful, and all of 685 years old. It’s an odd system at Oxford, you not only have to get into the university, but also be accepted to a college. As well as adding to the Harry Potter-tinged pompousness, they also provide accomodation, services, and a nice little social network. So it is nice to finally know which one I’ll be with for the next year.

Congrats, Brendan! I’m an Oxford student myself and have been following your blog for the last little while (love your photographs). I completed my M.Phil in 2008 and will be taking up a D.Phil in Politics come this September. Oriel is a great College and I have no doubt that you’ll have a marvelous time there (I’m at Merton myself). Welcome to Oxford!

Thanks Aleksandra! You must know Maeve then, who was at Merton last year…

I am excited. Merton was actually higher on my wish list. It seemed like it had a nice vibe, good accommodation and a good reputation. Ahh, who am I kidding, I just wanted to use the oldest grass tennis court in the world (isn’t it?)!. Anyhow, they were full by the time I got to them. But Oriel seems nice, and I’m happy to have a home for October.

I will probably hound you about getting onto that court in a few months!
